The Temporary Graduate Visa – Subclass 485 allows eligible international graduates to live, work, and study in Australia after completing an Australian qualification. It is designed to help graduates gain practical experience and transition into skilled migration visas or employer‑sponsored visas.

GRADUATE WORK STREAM - SUBCLASS 485

Purpose:

The Graduate Work Stream is for students who completed vocational or trade qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). It helps graduates gain skilled work experience in their nominated field.

Prerequisite:

  • Qualification must be closely related to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List
  • Skills assessment (provisional or full) for the nominated occupation
  • Age under 50
  • English proficiency (e.g., IELTS 6.0 overall or equivalent)
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Apply within 6 months of completing your course

Duration:

  • Up to 18 months (may vary based on policy updates).

POST-STUDY WORK STREAM - SUBCLASS 485

Purpose:

This is the most popular graduate visa 485, designed for graduates who completed a higher education degrees as Bachelor/ Master/ PhD in Australia. It offers longer post‑study work rights and is ideal for those aiming for skilled migration or employer sponsorship.

Prerequisite:

  • Completed an eligible Bachelor, Master’s, or Doctoral degree
  • Held a valid student visa for the course in the last 6 months
  • Age under 50
  • English proficiency
  • Meet health and character requirements.

Duration:

  • Bachelor Degree: 2 years
  • Master’s Degree (coursework): 2 years
  • Master’s Degree (research): 3 years
  • PhD Degree: 3-4 years (4 years for Indian nationals on select courses, 3 years for other graduates).

SECOND POST-STUDY WORK STREAM - SUBCLASS 485

Purpose:

This stream rewards graduates who studied and lived in regional Australia, offering an additional 1–2 years of work rights

Prerequisite:

  • Must already hold a Post‑Study Work Stream 485 visa
  • Completed a degree from a regional Australian institution
  • Lived in a designated regional area while holding the first 485
  • Must continue living in a regional area during the second visa.

Duration:

  • 1–2 more years depending on the regional category.
