407 Visa Update from 11 March 2026

The Australian Government has introduced important changes to the Training visa (407 Visa) to strengthen program integrity and ensure the visa is used for genuine workplace training. These updates affect all new 407 visa applicants, especially those applying onshore.

What Has Changed for 407 Visa?

From 11 March 2026, a 407 visa application is only valid when:

  • The applicant has an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor, and
  • If the sponsor is not a Commonwealth agency, an approved training nomination must also be in place before lodging the visa application.

This means no more concurrent lodgement of sponsorship, nomination, and visa applications. Sponsor approval and nomination approval must now occur first.

Why Did Australia Change 407 Visa Rules?

The Department of Home Affairs has tightened requirements due to:

  • A rise in non‑genuine 407 visa applications
  • Onshore applicants using the 407 as a quick bridging option
  • Inconsistent or low‑quality training plans
  • Misuse of the visa for work rather than structured training

These changes aim to improve visa integrity, reduce misuse, and support genuine training programs.

What This Means for Applicants

1. No more using 407 Visa as a quick bridging option

Onshore applicants can no longer lodge a 407 visa to extend their stay while waiting for sponsor or nomination approval.

2. Students & Working Holiday Makers must act early

If your visa is expiring soon, you must prepare early. Last‑minute lodgements will be invalid.

3. Sponsor & nomination approvals are now mandatory first steps

Your application will not be accepted unless these approvals are already in place.

4. Expect longer preparation timelines

Training plans, employer documents, and nomination evidence must be finalised earlier than before.
